Dramatic irony as the engine
Almost all of the comedy comes from an information gap: the reader knows what the characters do not. Only the child reads everyone's thoughts, the two adults are blind to each other, and the reader sees all three. Because the same scene means something different to each of them, conversation alone becomes comedy without needing an event.

Who it suits
